Memory for Events Lab (ME lab)
The ME Lab investigates the cognitive and neural mechanisms that support our ability to retrieve memories for naturalistic events, including autobiographical experiences from our personal past. We are particularly interested in understanding the constructive processes that enable us to edit memories—updating, enhancing, and sometimes distorting our memories. The ME Lab combines behavioral, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) approaches, and uses novel paradigms, virtual reality, and wearable camera technologies that allow for investigations of memory in real-world environments. Our current research focuses on understanding visual perspective (i.e., first and third-person perspectives) in memory.
Dr. Peggy L. St. Jacques (the PI of ME lab) joined U of A in 2018. She obtained her PhD in Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University, USA, after completing an Honors BSc in Psychology at the University of Toronto, Canada. She then conducted an NRSA funded post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, USA, before moving to the UK as a Lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of Sussex, UK, from 2015 - 2018. Dr. St. Jacques has published about 30 articles in major journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Trends in Cognitive Sciences, and Psychological Science. She was recently named an Association for Psychological Science Rising Star and elected to the prestigious Memory Disorders Research Society.
Literature review, development of stimuli (e.g., virtual reality environments, 360-degree videos, etc.) for cognitive testing, programming of behavioral and virtual reality paradigms, experimental design, data coding and analyses.

There will be differing proportions of skill and luck that should determine the extent to which we take responsibility for the outcomes we experience: in a strategic environment we must know when our losses were due to lack of knowledge about our opponent and know to do better; in a random environment we must know when our wins were due to luck and know not to make too much of it. My research examined how competitive states are represented in the brain, and how these initial states serve as a catalyst in determining future behaviour. Many of our studies involve individuals playing simple competitive games against different kinds of opponents, as a controlled way to study these mechanisms. Outside of the laboratory, we think about the implications of this research for individuals exhibiting problem gambling and the ownership of negative thoughts that are often at the heart of generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Dr Ben Dyson is the Re:Cognition Lab director and joined UofA in 2018. He has held academic positions both in the UK (University of Sussex) and Canada (Ryerson University) since 2004. To date, he has published 43 peer-reviewed articles, in addition to co-authoring an undergraduate textbook on Cognition Psychology.

Virtual Environments & Spatial Cognition Lab (VESC lab)
VESC lab is investigating human spatial cognition using behavioral experimental methods. The main research facility is immersive virtual environments. The major research goals are to understand how people develop/organize spatial memory and how people navigate in the environments relying on their spatial memory and momentary cues (both visual and self-motion cues). The current research projects are investigating how people determine their position and orientation in multi-scale and 3D spaces and how people develop a global and 3D spatial representation. Professor Mou (the PI of VESC lab) joined U of A in 2007. Prior to it, he worked as a professor at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IPCAS) between 2003 and 2007. He got his PhD at IPCAS and BS in the department of psychology of Hangzhou University (Now Zhejiang University). He has published about 40 articles in major journals of cognitive experimental psychology, most in JEP or Cognition.
